Executive Summary of the "Local and Private Sector Initiatives with Global Environmental Benefits" Case Study

In order for developing countries to make an organized response to environmental issues such as global warming, it is imperative that environmental provisions be tied to sustainable growth. We conducted a case study of the Japanese model of maintaining economic growth simultaneously with environmental preservation and energy efficiency, focusing particularly on the advanced efforts of private sector companies (Nippon Steel, Electric Power Development Company, and Sumitomo Forestry). The study, which is titled "Local and Private Sector Initiatives with Global Environmental Benefits," is due for publication by the World Bank Institute in spring 2001. Here is the executive summary of this case study.
