| Description: | Participants at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (Earth Summit) held in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, deliberated on preservation of the global environment and sustainable development, such as global warming, biological diversity (biodiversity) and other common issues facing all of humankind. Compared with local and regional environmental destruction, which was a main agenda of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm in 1972, global environmental issues discussed at the 1992 conference are essentially different ones and considered as complicated issues of economic theory and policy. The Research Center on Global Warming, created within RICF to study such environmental issues as global warming from the perspective of social common capital, invited some of the world's prominent economists, including Nobel laureates in economics, to two international symposiums held in November 1995, entitled "Environment and Sustainable Development." |

This symposium provided an opportunity for the candid exchange of opinions concerning the global environment and sustainable development, through reports of highly original research results and from a highly specialized perspective. Research papers featuring an extremely high level of academic specialization were presented.

(2)Tokyo Symposium (Symposium on the Environment and Sustainable Development: Roles of Japan with Regard to Global Environmental Issues):November 10 (Fri), 1995.
This public symposium took place in the form of a panel discussion at the Keidanren Kaikan, located in Tokyo's Otemachi district. Building on the results of the Hakone Symposium, the Tokyo Symposium featured illuminating discussions concerning the global environment and sustainable development and explored Japan's roles in addressing the issue. The symposium, which attracted more than 400 participants from academic circles, the business community and policymaking institutions, proved highly meaningful.
