Investment in Preferred Shares for Quake Restoration of Joban Kosan

Joban Kosan, Ltd. (headquarters: Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture), is a major domestic tourism operator that manages Spa Resort Hawaiians (SRH) that uses hot spring water. In 2011, SRH was severely damaged in the Great East Japan Earthquake. The facility had no alternative but to close its doors for repairs.

After the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, DBJ put together the Great East Japan Earthquake Reconstruction Fund in cooperation with financial institutions in disaster-stricken areas to supply a large volume of risk money. In the SRH project, DBJ investment in the preferred shares of Joban Kosan supported early reconstruction using long-term and large-scale funds.

Joban Kosan's efforts resulted in an all-time high number of guests at SRH in fiscal year 2013, which contributed greatly to its early recovery. Consequently, SRH became a symbol of restoration and a light of hope for reclaiming vitality in the disaster-stricken region overall. Recently, SRH added the Big Aloha waterslide to its enormous waterpark. The Big Aloha's length and variations in elevation make it the top ranked waterslide in Japan and attract a steady stream of tourists.

DBJ supports the growth of Joban Kosan through discussions on growth financing and business strategies, thereby contributing to the tourism industry in Fukushima Prefecture underpinned by the growth of Joban Kosan.
