Development Bank of Japan Inc. (DBJ) has committed to invest in Lightstone Ventures III, L.P., a life science venture capital fund managed by Lightstone Ventures.
Lightstone Ventures is a global venture capital firm investing in innovative biotech and medtech companies. The firm has offices in Silicon Valley, Boston, Dublin and Singapore. Since its inception in 2012, Lightstone has invested in more than 30 companies and has achieved a number of successful exits. Lightstone Ventures III, L.P. is the third fund the firm has raised, and it plans to continuously invest in early stage companies developing high impact therapeutics and technologies that have the potential to change patients' lives.
DBJ was an investor in Lightstone's second fund established in 2017. We have been working to energize Japan's life science ecosystem through collaboration with Lightstone and learning from its successful investments overseas. DBJ invested in Lightstone's third fund with the aim of promoting collaboration with the company and gaining knowledge of the advanced pharmaceuticals and medical devices it has under development.
As the coronavirus pandemic highlights the increasing importance of developing new medicines and medical devices worldwide, a life science ecosystem centered on venture companies has a vital role to play. DBJ will utilize the knowledge gained through this investment as we contribute to the development of the life science ecosystem in Japan.
