Development Bank of Japan Inc. ("DBJ") has signed an investment agreement with Gresham House Forest Fund VI LP ("the Fund"), managed by Gresham House Asset Management Limited ("Gresham House"; CEO Tony Dalwood). The Fund invests in sustainable, productive forestry in the United Kingdom, mainly focusing on assets located in Scotland. Utilizing its distinguished investor network and premium timber asset sales to large sawmills, the Fund aims to enhance its fund return to LP investors.
Gresham House, established in 1857, is a specialist alternative asset manager focused on delivering financial returns for clients by investing in the global themes shaping our future. It is the largest forestry asset manager in the U.K. and largely expanded its timber and forestry investment portfolio in response to anticipated large participation from high net worth individuals and institutional investors.
In 2021 and 2023, DBJ invested in TIR Europe Forestry Fund 2 and TIR Europe Sustainable Forestry and Natural Capital Fund SCSp SICAV-RAIF, funds established by Timberland Investment Resources LLC and its associates, with the aim of acquiring knowledge from overseas advanced cases in timberland investment and bringing it to the domestic market to pursue the possibility of future deployment in Japan. While Japanese financial investors' investments in timberland are still limited, DBJ aims to further deepen our knowledge through this investment in the U.K., one of the most active timberland investment markets in Europe. We will strive to bring knowledge and skills to Japanese financial institutions and contribute to the revitalization of the country's timberland business.
DBJ's corporate philosophy is to "apply financial expertise to design the future: to open up new frontiers as we resolve the issues of our clients and the community while promoting sustainable development for Japan and the world." In keeping with these principles, DBJ will lend financial support to efforts to resolve issues facing Japanese food, agriculture and forest industries and promote their further development.
